What you can be asked to pay

Letting fees for tenants are banned in England. Before you move in, you can only be asked for these, each capped by law.

  • Holding deposit

Up to one week's rent, to reserve the home while checks are done. It is refundable.

  • Tenancy deposit

Up to five weeks' rent (six if the annual rent is £50,000 or more), protected with the Deposit Protection Service within 30 days.

  • Rent in advance

Only after you have signed the tenancy agreement, and no more than one month's rent.
